Ubuntu instead of Windows Mobile on the HTC Touch Pro 2

Ubuntu literally entered on mobile devices. The latest achievement is to run Linux system equipped with a fully-fledged version of GNOME on the phone, the HTC Touch Pro 2 instead of Windows Mobile.

Definitely this doesn't bode well Microsoft whose news system is not very well liked by users and programmers.

A short presentation of the system you can find below, but as the author points out - he is not user of Ubuntu. It is therefore not surprised to see the calendar - for unknown reasons, attached to the desktop. This is unfortunately not the feature but bug.

There are also no problems with the keyboard and starting applications like OpenOffice or Abiword and operating with touch screen. Of course, due to lack of appropriate software, you can not make calls from within Ubuntu.

Preventing Repetitive Strain Injury With Workrave

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit.

Please refer to the feature comparison for a complete list of features, and how the program performs with respect to other programs on the market.

You can install Porkrave in Ubuntu by typing:

sudo apt-get install workrave

The program runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows and you can find the packages on the authors site.

Linux at CeBIT 2010

In the last week took place the world's largest computer expo - CeBIT 2010. According to organizers, it was visited by over 334 thousand of people. Among them was also our reader Adrian Widerski who prepared for us a few photos containing Linux accents.

Unfortunately, he did not have enough time to penetrate into the details of individual projects, but definitely the most interesting of which he saw, was a digital table. The project is very much like Microsoft's product called MS Sufrace. The main different is that this table is powered by Ubuntu.

Intelligent desk support also multitouch and it is not using a big LCD screen above, but a projector hung over the table. I think that helped significantly reduce construction costs.

At the CeBIT we could also found Joomla and OpenOffice places, but there was nothing really interesting for people who keep up the withe news on it's websites. An interesting thing was also Ubuntu screenshot at the begin of newsletter German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz).

As we can see, popular sentence "the future is open" is becoming real.

Elive 2.0 - lighweit Linux for demanding users

Usually, a simple graphical environment is a denial of built-in functionality, but as we see - not always. As it turns out, a example of simple and functional distribution at the same time is Elive 2.0 released few days ago.

One of the biggest advantages is that the distribution is relying directly on the popular Debian and use a minimalist environment called Enlightenment. This makes the Elive can run on a computer equipped with a 100 MHz processor and only 64 MB of memory. Is also not required 3D acceleration on the graphics card.

Elive comes with a full suite of applications for either work or leisure. It offers everything from a full Office suite to games and Multimedia. You can enjoy watching movies to making your own. Creating DVD movies with custom menus and theme music can easily be accomplished by using the included real-time non-linear video editor.

Elive gives you the ability to make 3D animations, edit and manipulate audio and image files for better quality, effects, or design. Elive is a very stable system that will continue to run day after day without problems. The Enlightenment desktop is ultra-fast and perfectly stable with no random errors or surprises. Clementine - A Largely Port of Amarok 1.4 based on Qt4

The changes in the latest version of KDE were not welcomed by all. The revolution was very desirable, but this doesn't mean that we have no choice now. Fans of earlier versions can still install Amarok version based on Qt 3.x or check out the tool Clementine which is an unofficial port of Amarok based on Qt4 .

Clementine allows You to search and play your local music library, listen to internet radio from Last.fm and SomaFM and easily edit tags on MP3 and OGG files. Clementine is cross-platform software so it runs both on Windows and Linux operating system as well. It supports also new Ubuntu notifications system (libnotify) and on Mac OS X (Growl).

Of course, many new features which is equipped with Amarok 2 has not yet been placed in Clementine so it's a proposal for less demanding users. Anyway, thanks to less functionality, Clementine runs lot faster than Amarok 2, so as we can see, everything have it's positive sides.

For the future releases, developers are planning automatically copy files from disk to your music library function, support for iPod and MP3 players, automatic tag completion and support loading and saving playlists.

This is only the first release of Clementine, and there is a lot of stuff that isn't finished yet, but you can download it from Qt Apps.

Connect Your Keyboard To Android Phone

Virtual keyboard of phones which are equipped with a touch screen can sometimes irritate, but after several days of use, they are ussualy no longer a problem.

Counting that, what I was writing many times - modern phones are becoming actually miniature computers so there is nothing in the way to connect they to external devices. Recently a few geeks tried to anchor the standard USB keyboard to the Android smartphone - ant they succeed. All you have to do is the preparation an appropriate cable.

In fact I can't imagine too many opportunities for using such keyboard. Maybe when we're going to face with computer failure - the phone with full keyboard can be a pretty nice device for answering e-mails.

Taking the big keyboard for the travel is also not so great idea. Unfortunately we always have to decide between the mobility and convenience. I think this is an interesting curiosity, however it shows that the small size of the phone doesn't mean that it will not cooperate with the full standard PC peripherals.

Quake Live: Year One - Interesting Statistics

A quarter million players since the first year and a tremendous success due to its simplicity and convenience - it's just some of the facts characterized the browser game Quake Live. For the first time a fully fledged 3D game came to the network without the need to install additional software or take out a license.

In practice, the only thing we have to do is to install a Firefox plugin that will allow the browser perform simple instructions using OpenGL. Hardware requirements are not large, so the game quickly gained popularity and has gained unprecedented number of permanent members.

Here are some screenshots of the new map called "Fallout Bunker":

The number of people that registered when the QUAKE LIVE Beta opened far exceeded our wildest expectations. Over a quarter million players created accounts right after its launch and that was through word of mouth only! Since that time, players have spent over 8.9 million hours in over 60 million ranked matches, earning an impressive 8 million awards and 810 million frags.

The title of 'Most Time Played' goes to Pudrick, who has spent nearly 56 days in-game on ranked servers since launch. Our two Dark Angels, Yakumo and Trajan, have been battling for the title of 'Most Frags', a title currently held by Yakumo, who has gained over 258,000 kills.

Quake Live is currently taking place at CeBIT where twelve competitors qualified to continue on to the ESL Intel Extreme Masters World Championships to be held March 3rd-6th at the CeBIT convention in Hannover.

It is not difficult to see that more and more tools is transferred to the Internet and thus we have easier access to them and we also more likely to use them. Simly. :)

The new style in Ubuntu is inspired by the idea of "Light". Lets check out what's new!

Easy Backup Your Files With Dkopp

DVDs are slowly becoming the past, because they are being replaced by Blu-ray technology, however they are still frequently used to archive videos and files which are too big for normal 700 MB CD.

dkopp is a free open source Linux program used to copy or back-up disk files to DVD. Full or incremental backups can be done, with full or incremental DVD verification. A GUI is used to navigate through directories to select or de-select files or directories at any level. Backup jobs can be saved for later re-use. New, deleted, and updated disk files are handled automatically, without re-editing the backup job. An incremental backup updates the same DVD used for a prior full backup. Files can be restored to the same or another location on disk. Large backup jobs can be done using multiple DVD media.

The same tool is not distinguished by any unusual features. It simply allows to do an backup of selected folders and supports archiving of only the data that have changed since the last backup.

Igelle - Lightweight System For Portable Computers

Igelle is an advanced modern operating system for desktop computers, mobile devices, embedded systems and server computers, that provides powerful computing features in a modern, easy-to-use environment for a very wide range of devices and hardware. - Describes Igelle developers on the project website. I also checked how the system performs on my hardware.

The system turns on and works quite fast. After start, splash-screen welcome us with a white background containing Igelle logo. Desktop environment used in Igelle is not very popular Esther, which is somewhat similar to GNOME, and it has borrowed some elements, such as a panels (I know that it may sounds obvious ;)). You can not disagree with the fact that the system is simple. He is really trivial to use and packed in a nice animations.

Standard web browser is Epiphany, but from the "Add / Remove" you can of course install Firefox if you can't live without him. After installation there is available only few applications, but most of them is often used. Many others such as XChat or Mplayer are available for the installation in just a few clicks. There is also WINE in default installation that lets you for example play the games from MS Windows.

Interesting solution is to move up the "settings" and "programs" menu which is grouped into one application. Another interesting feature is automatically hiding bar at the bottom of the desktop. It would be even better if it could somehow prevail over what is in it. I hope that developers fall into this and future versions will be able to change this settings.

In my opinion this distribution is an interesting competitor for Ubuntu. Its simplicity surpasses them in everyday activities such as installing new tools where you can do it without typing a password.

Nautilus With GNOME Zeitgeist Integration

Admittedly, that GNOME from week to week is becoming increasingly interesting, not only because of the numerous mockups but also because of developers who say that most of the presented innovations can be implemented without any problems.

Recently a very interesting concept was introduced by Ian Cylkowski, who suggested a combination of GNOME Zeitgeist and Nautilus. It was a big surprise for the developers of both projects who did not expect a such solution. Seif Lotfy with whom I talked some time ago promised: "So if someone can link me with a tutorial how to extend the nautlius sidebar I will add the “commonly accessed” functionality within an hour or 2!"

Ian Cylkowski admits that he is not a programmer, but that did not prevent him in the creation of great mockups. The first two images in this entry was made by his hands.

The whole work is based on DanRabbit mockup called "Nautilus Elementary" (picture below). Nautilus Elementary is still a bit lacking, but projects like this give GNOME users hope that their environment will not differ much of KDE, which recently changed almost everything in his environment.

Phones with Android operating system usually provides a big screen resolutions so we can use it as a convenient digital book readers.

To install FBReader in your phone just find it in Android Market and then... just install ;)

FBReader is easy to use and I thing that there is no need to write about something that simple. I can only tell, that you can add the bookmarks and using search engine inside without any trouble, what is actually very useful.

There's also no problem to install FGReader in Windows Mobile, Maemo or even Ubuntu. Just type in the console:

sudo apt-get install fbreader

FBReader works with oeb, epub and fb2 formats, but you can create ebook from another filetypes such as txt, rtf, pdf.

To do this, just install the Callibre:

sudo apt-get install calibre

Turn off the Splash Screen in Ubuntu 9.10

The console is not something what begginers like, but we can turn off the splash screen to accelerate the computer start and provide us information about currently started services.

At the begin, open the GRUB 2 config file:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
In the line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
Remove the words quiet and splash, so it should look like:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
After saving the file, to refresh the GRUB settings, type in the console:

sudo update-grub

After the last Ubuntu found in the Millennium movie, users spotted them now in the popular British television series Doctor Who.

They look like Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) to me. Probably multiple screens connected to one computer as they are all showing the same thing in the actual episode itself.

Fotowall - easy way to create a photo collage

On Linux, there are only few tools that allow complete amateur to create a photo collage. Fotowall is actually a forerunner in this field and I must admit that it works well.

Creating Collages in Fotowall pure pleasure and is tantamount to pulling the tool consecutive images and their proper positon.

An interesting feature is also possible to insert a cloud of words, which is an interesting visual presentation of the most common words in the text file. There is also no problem with adding any formatted text.

Fotowall is available not only for Linux but also for Mac OS and Windows, so as it usually happens in such cases, it looks excellent and supports additional features like Compiz and OpenGL acceleration.

As you can see, OpenGL works very well for me but even without acceleration everything is running smoothly.

Playing YouTube videos without Adobe Flash (also in HD)

Flash not long ago (for the world of computers it's a bit longer) was considered to be a real shame of Linux systems, working very slow and unstable. These days we have fortunately far behind and thanks to the new standard browsers, you can watch videos on the site completely without the Flash.

The easiest way to get this effect is use the Greasemonkey script, which can be found in Mozilla's Add-on directory. Later we just need to install additional script from here and restart Firefox.

From now on, videos will be played using the player embedded on the page (as in the picture above).

One of its many advantages is the possibility of much larger configuration, which allows, for example, pre-select in quality of the videos. There are also new links, which allow you to quickly download the material in one of the desired quality.

How to install Blood Frontier - single and multi-player FPS

Sometimes it is good to get away from improving the appearance of the system or from work. A few days ago releases Blood Frontier, which will accompany boring evenings. The second Beta of Blood Frontier was released few days ago, let's check what's new inside.

As you can read on the project site, new version provides:
* Unique, original, and fun gameplay, storyline, theme, artwork, and content. Pushing the boundaries of open source first person gaming.
* More configurable, providing an extensive range of world variables for mappers and game variables for players/admin to control every aspect.
* Play plain ol' deathmatch, instagib, ctf, duel, lms, or use the select range of mutators and myriad of variables to create your own.
* Item domination and dropping, fight for your lives over a great range of weapons, each with its own distinct personality, pros, and cons.
* Strong artificial intelligence (A.I. or "Bots") capable of participating within all modes of its deathmatch environment, even online.

The game is of course free software and you can install it from PlayDeb.net. Before that, you have to add the repository to your software sources simply by installing the package from here.

New Plasma animations in KDE 4.4

With the release of KDE 4.4 SC (February 2010) wait for us many innovations that improve the usability of the new version environment. One of them is the module responsible for the Kinetic animations, and one class - QAbstractAnimation, introducing the effects of various animation elements plasmas.

The author of this post is our user Kira.
I must admit it looks quite impressively. Animations of this type were known so far in the Enlightenment and influenced by its popularity, but the animation in Qt 4.6 also introduce an element of physics so that changes the location button.

The movie showing the latest animations can be found here.

Results will not be shown yet, probably, visible with the release of SC KDE 4.4, but now there is a trend to use them by some developers. Kinetic has already been implemented in the uBlog plasmoid, and plasma-netbook to scroll through the application icons.

Animation effects are also improved in the Nokia phones. The company actively supports the development of Qt, with the intent to transfer it to the new version of Maemo. The following video demonstration shows Kinetic on Nokia N900 tablet:

How to install the HSDPA ZTE MF626 modem in Linux

Mobile Internet is an increasingly popular and with this trend is increasing the amount of new equipment with which they must cope with the system. This time we will be installing the ZTE MF626 HSDPA modem.

The popularity of Mobile Internet is still increasing and unfortunately Linux is not supporting all modems out of box. This time I'll show you how to set up HSDPA ZTE MF626 mobile modem.

1. At the begin yoe need to download the usb_modeswitch driver from this site.

2. Then unpack and install the archive by typing:

tar -jxvf usb_modeswitch-0.9.7.tar.bz2
cd usb_modeswitch-0.9.7/
sudo make install

3. Edit the configuration file usb_modeswitch.conf:

sudo gedit /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf
And in line 471 find something like this:

After the recent premiere of the first Beta release of Google Chrome for Linux and Mac, the giant from Mountain Viev starts an interesting promotion campaign.

Google knows how to use the current trends on the internet and this time Google encouraged to send gifts. Although it is not the same as a standard gift it all looks very nice and moody.

You do not need to choose the version of your gift - there was no problems for me - in the last step of the wizard detects a gift receipt as Linux.

Currently, almost the most important element of a web browser (as well as many other types of applications) is ability to adapt it to a specific user.

I think that everyone heard about the extensions for Firefox, but the situation is much worse when we look at Internet Explorer or Opera. Who knows, maybe this is the mystery behind the big popularity of Firefox.

Anyway, Google is always learning from the market leader and this time, simultaneously with releasing Google Chrome Beta, Google opens the extensions place for Chrome and open source Chromium browser.

Now at the project site you can find extensions such as Xmarks or GMail Checker and hundreds more.

Few moments ago KDE Team announced that DE 4.3 is finally ready. Now you can also find the latest sources on the official KDE website. In the new KDE release community fixed around 10 thousands bugs and improved almost 2000 new features.

It's gonna be time for tests in the next days, but now, few hours official announcement just enjoy the small gallery of screens of the new KDE 4.3 which was made by Piotr Godlewski (thanks) on his Fedora Linux.

How to add GetDeb.net repository to Ubuntu

I think, that I don't need to introduce GetDeb.net website where you can find a lot of latest packages which you can easy install in Ubuntu. Downloading every package "by hands" isn't convenient so I will show you how to add GetDeb repository to your Ubuntu which allow you to install new applications by one command in Terminal.

Just type in the console the command (or paste using shortcut Ctrl+Shift+V):

echo "deb http://getdeb.masio.com.mx/ jaunty/" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list && sudo apt-get update

That's it. Now in Synaptic or other package manager you can simply find the packages from GetDeb.net. Remember that it's non-official repository so if something doesn't work there's nothing you can do.

Add Your Facebook contacts to Pidgin communicator

Facebook is the biggest social website on the Earth so I think I don't need to waste my (and your's) time to talk more about what it is. I found today an interesting add-on for Pidgin which is still default (it will be replaced by Emphaty in the future) communicator in Ubuntu Linux.

The plugin is simply called pidgin-facebook and allows you talk with your friends using Pidgin front-end. It's absolutely more convenient than ordinary web-embed window, isn't it?

You can find pidgin-facebook in the default Ubuntu repositories ('sudo apt-gee install pidgin-facebook' - to install) or simply install it from Deb package which you can find here.

After installation process, you have to restart Pidgin and then just add new account. Remember to choose 'Facebook' in type. Fill the e-mail and password field and click 'save'. That's it, your new contacts should appear at the top of the list.
