Google Gears is available as a software plugin for Firefox and it allows you to run websites as a desktop application. Although the plugin is used by lots of people, Google hasn't still created official version for 64-bit architecture systems. Thanks the licence, which is of course open source, one of the users decided to solve this problem.

As he wrote on the post in his blog, he just downloaded the source and tweaked few things which allowed him to run Google Gears on the 64-bit architecture Ubuntu. Sounds easy, right? If one person could do this, why Google wasn't first?

You can download the add-on from this site (xpi format). I think it simply shows how big is the power behind open source projects.
